If you're good at games, you're probably pretty smart.

Duh. We already knew that! But thanks to SCIENCE we finally have some street cred to our intellect. According to a new study, they used League of Legends (LoL) and Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2) as measures comparable to IQ!

Both games combine strategic thinking and quick reactions. Rewarding skilled play further enhances the training of those two aspects.

Professor Alex Wade, from the University of York said;
"Games such as League of Legends and DOTA 2 are complex, socially-interactive and intellectually demanding. Our research would suggest that your performance in these games can be a measure of intelligence. Research in the past has pointed to the fact that people who are good at strategy games such as chess tend to score highly at IQ tests. Our research has extended this to games that millions of people across the planet play every day."

 The study appears in the journal of Public Library of Science ONE.

In one study, the York team matched performance (MMR not included!) in League of Legends with your regular pen-and-paper IQ tests. That was then compared to other groups of other Gamers.
The researchers found that First Person Shooter (FPS) gamers did NOT manage to link their GANKing skills with their IQ. York PhD student Athanasios Kokkinakis, the study's lead author, said:
"Unlike First Person Shooter (FPS) games where speed and target accuracy are a priority, Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas rely more on memory and the ability to make strategic decisions taking into account multiple factors."

FPS gamer or MOBA gamer, its pretty clear that Gamers are definitely a intellectual class above over non-gamers. It only differs whether you're good at landing a headshot or macro-managing Zerglings.  IQ itself as a measure has its limits too, but its nice to be acknowledged by the guys in lab coats for something positive.
